Birtukan Cinnor, MD

Dr.Cinnor first came to the twin cities in 2001 after a college recruiter came to her boarding high school in Flekke Fjord, Norway on a beautiful August day and told her that Minnesota was just like Norway. She applied early decision and came to attend Macalester College in Saint Paul, MN where she graduated with honors with double majors in Chemistry and Biology and a minor in Anthropology, ran for the varsity women's cross country team and met her husband.

After graduating from Macalester, she crossed the river and attended the University of Minnesota School of Public Health as a Catherine D. and John T. MacArthur Fellow where she obtained her Master's in Public Health with a focus in Epidemiology and worked part time at the Minnesota Department of Health.

She then moved to Chicago and attended Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine where she was selected as a Chicago Area Albert Schweitzer Fellow. She then moved to Portland, Oregon to join her husband who was there for a job and also completed her internship and residency at the Oregon Health & Science University.  At OHSU, she was inducted into the Gold Humanism Society and received awards including the Medical House Staff Teaching Award, and the John A. Benson, Jr., MD Humanism Award in recognition of exceptional compassion in caring for patients.

After residency, she and her husband moved to Colorado where she completed her fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Colorado where she was awarded the Rocky Mountain Mehta award given to the first year fellow that demonstrated excellence in the first year of gastroenterology fellowship. She was also a Surgical/Subspecialties Clinical Outcomes Research (SCORE) fellow. When the time came to choose a place to settle down, she and her husband decided to return to MN. 


Dr. Cinnor has a wide array of interests in gastroenterology as well as hepatology especially in inflammatory bowel disease and general hepatology. Her research interests also span many areas of GI and she has published in peer reviewed journals, book chapters and presented her work at regional, national and international conferences where she has won awards for her work.

Personal Interests

Dr.Cinnor loves being a physician and considers herself fortunate to be in the profession. When not at work, she enjoys long distance running including marathons, hiking, cooking, hosting gatherings for meals and conversation, traveling to visit landscapes and friends, reading, listening to podcasts and more than anything being with her husband and their son.
