Professional Background

Dr. Tombers graduated from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. He received his medical degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee. Returning to Minnesota, Dr. Tombers performed his internship at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth. He moved to the Twin Cities for his residency in internal medicine at the University of Minnesota and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital. Dr. Tombers completed his fellowship in gastroenterology in 1973 at the same healthcare facilities. His continuing medical education has included a study leave in hepatology at the Royal Free Hospital in London, England.

Following his internship, from 1965 to1966, he participated in a medical mission to Honduras. From 1973 to 1978, Dr. Tombers worked part-time on the clinical faculty at the University of Minnesota. He also served as Chief of the Medical Staff at Fairview-Southdale Hospital in Edina. Dr. Tombers was president of the Hennepin County Medical Society, 1991-92, and was chairman of the Hennepin County Medical Society Board, 1992-1993.  Since 1997, Dr. Tombers has participated in annual (2 week) trips (medical work) in Honduras.

The American Board of Gastroenterology and the American Board of Internal Medicine have certified Dr. Tombers in his professional practice. His special medical interests are inflammatory bowel disease, liver disorders and irritable bowel syndrome.
