Antivirals for Hepatitis B
For Health Care Providers:
The hepatitis B virus can result in liver damage by immune mechanisms.
If a patient is prescribed immunosuppressants, chemotherapy, or steroids an antiviral should be started to reduce the risk of flare of liver disease.
Minnesota Gastroenterology currently recommends the following antiviral medications:
Viread (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) 300 mg by mouth once daily
Baraclude (entecavir) 0.5 mg by mouth once daily
