Antivirals for Hepatitis B

For Health Care Providers:

The hepatitis B virus can result in liver damage by immune mechanisms.

If a patient is prescribed immunosuppressants, chemotherapy, or steroids an antiviral should be started to reduce the risk of flare of liver disease.

Minnesota Gastroenterology currently recommends the following antiviral medications:

Viread (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) 300 mg by mouth once daily

Baraclude (entecavir) 0.5 mg by mouth once daily
