Lactulose Breath Test
How do I prepare for this test?
To ensure accurate test results and that your exam will not need to be repeated, please remember:
- Do not have anything to eat 12 hours before you exam;
- You may only have water before the test;
- Avoid slowly digesting foods (Beans and other vegetables) the day before the test;
- DO NOT smoke, sleep, or exercise vigorously for at least ½ hour before or at any time during the test;
- Be sure the medical staff is aware of any recent antibiotic therapy since it can affect the test.
What should I expect during my exam?
First, we will take a baseline breath sample. Then you will administer the challenge dose of lactulose according to the following protocol:
- 10-13 gm lactulose in 6-8 oz of water for adults
- 0.5g/kg body weight up to 10g total for children
- Collect breath samples every 20 minutes up to 180 minutes. (Baseline, 20min, 40min, 60min, 80min, 100min, 120min, 140min, 160min, 180min)
Please allow 2 to 3 ½ hours for the test.
What happens after the procedure?
Results will not be available before 10 to 14 working days after your test.
