Lactose Breath Hydrogen Test
What is a Lactose Breath Hydrogen Test?
This exam enables the doctor to determine your degree of sensitivity, if any, to lactose products (i.e. milk, cheese, ice cream, etc. contain lactose). When lactose is combined with the normal bacteria in the intestine, hydrogen gas is expired as you breathe. You will be asked to breathe into a mask and your breath will be collected and analyzed.
Why is a Lactose Breath Hydrogen test recommended?
This is exam can determine if you have a problem digesting lactose products. Symptoms include diarrhea, gas, cramping, and bloating.
How do I prepare for this test?
To ensure accurate test results and that your exam will not need to be repeated, please remember:
- Do not have anything to eat or drink 10 hours before you exam;
- Two weeks prior to your test you must stop taking antibiotics;
- Three days prior to your exam do not eat products that are lactose-reduced, such as Lactaid milk;
- Twenty-four hours before your test avoid high fiber foods such as bran cereal or whole grains;
- Do not chew gum the morning of your exam;
What should I expect during my exam?
First, we will take a baseline breath sample by having you breathe into a small mask. Then you will be given a lactose drink. (The size of the drink for adults is about 10 oz. and for pediatric patients, it is based on body weight.) Every 30 minutes for a two-hour period, you will be asked to again breathe into the mask. We will take four breath samples. Please allow 2 ½ to 3 hours for the test.
What happens after the procedure?
You will be given an evaluation sheet to take home with you and you will be asked to rate the severity, if any, of the symptoms of diarrhea, gas, cramping or bloating. You will be asked to call your symptoms in the following day to 612-870-5514. Combined with computer analysis, this evaluation is an important part of your test. Without it, we will not have accurate test results for you. After we receive you evaluation, we give it to the doctor who analyzes the findings. Results will not be available before 10 to 14 working days after we receive your evaluation.
Are there any complications?
This exam is very safe for you. There are very few potential serious complications. You may feel minor discomfort from diarrhea, gas, cramping or bloating.
