What Does a Colonoscopy Cost?

With the advent of higher health insurance deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses, many patients are interested in learning the price of a routine screening colonoscopy prior to scheduling their procedure.

Having a screening colonoscopy at a Minnesota Gastroenterology endoscopy center is generally less expensive than having the procedure performed in a hospital setting. Our state-of-the-art centers are certified by Medicare and follow strict guidelines for quality and patient safety.

Will my insurance cover the cost of the screening?
Most health insurance plans, including Medicare, recognize the importance of colorectal screening and help pay for the exam. Because coverage can vary, we encourage you to check with your insurer to determine your coverage and out-of-pocket costs.

It is also a good idea to verify your level of insurance coverage in the event that polyp or tissue removal is required (often considered a diagnostic rather than a screening procedure), since this may change your out-of-pocket costs.

How much does a screening colonoscopy cost?
The price for a routine screening colonoscopy performed at a Minnesota Gastroenterology endoscopy center is $1,568. Our patients typically receive two bills, one for the physician fee and one for the facility fee. This price is the combined total of these fees.

What does this price include?
• Minnesota Gastroenterology physician and endoscopy center fees
• Nursing and support staff
• Sedation used during the procedure
• Patient education and discharge instructions
• A written summary sent to your primary doctor

What is not included in this price?
• Tissue biopsy or polyp removal
• Lab, technical or biopsy fees related to specimens or blood work
• Pathology fees from the physician who examines biopsied tissue for cancer
• Follow up appointments or additional testing
• Future screening or treatment

Because we cannot predict the outcome of your examination, we are unable to guarantee the exact dollar amount of your individual procedure. Tissue biopsy and/or polyp removal will increase the cost of the procedure.
